Barack's Half-brother--living in penury

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:39:42 AM PDT

This is literally BREAKING news on World Net Daily.  Though they've lifted the report from the Telegraph

Since the report admits that George Hussein Onyango Obama is mentioned in Barack's autobiography and he last saw him in 2006, the headline doesn't seem quite accurate.

Barack Obama's 'lost' brother found in Kenya
Senator Barack Obama's long lost brother has been tracked down for the first time living in a shanty town in Kenya, reports claimed.

BETRAYAL - Clinton Brother Meets McCain Advisor

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:38:38 AM PDT

The Clintons and their people no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt with regard to putting their loyalty to the party above their pursuit of personal legacy. Two evenings ago, Tony Rodham and others met with...

Obama outraises McSame... in Utah?

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:29:18 AM PDT

Just wanted to post this to give a little hope in the dark times of this week.

Obama Outraising McCain 5:4

Obviously Obama is exceedingly unlikely to win Utah. But the fact that he is garnering more donations in the most solidly red state in the nation, not to mention one that border's McCain's (and my) home state, is heartening at the very least. While funds don't guarantee a win, it certainly doesn't put McCain in the best of positions after his convention, when he has to (is supposed to) take public financing only.

Obama Campaign Repudiates Nigerian Money-Bag

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:26:52 AM PDT

It took a lot of phone calls and emails, but the Obama for America Campaign has officially distanced itself from the controversial "Africa for Obama" group led by one Professor Ndi Okereke-Onyuike.

In a strongly-worded letter that leaves no wiggle room for misinterpretation, the Campaign forcefully dissociates itself from efforts by the controversial head of the Nigerian Stock Exchange to raise funds with the expressed intention of remitting such funds to the Obama Campaign.

More below the fold.

Barack Obama's Vice President is probably Joe Biden.. Thank God

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:22:42 AM PDT

He can stand toe to toe with McCain on experience and foreign policy.

He's extremely well known, a great speaker, carries tons of gravitas, and is a fantastic attack dog.

If you've ever seen his appearence on Real Time with Bill Maher, you would know that he is an extraordinarily intelligent man. He predicted, within an year of the Iraq War starting, that it was going to turn into a civil war, and that the administration needs to act fast, needs to engage and pay the local leaders to help regain order and laid out a strategy to win the war that is near identical to what we are finally doing. Paying the local tribal leaders to keep the peace.

Here's the link...

Hopefully, they're right and Biden is the VP pick.

Picking some unknown with little foreign policy credentials and minimal political experience would be a huge mistake.

Wesley Clark as VP – A view from Europe

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:19:06 AM PDT

This is not diary number 203995 on who will be the choice for VP, but a diary about how General Wesley Clark will be welcomed in Europe, if selected. This is my point of view as a Norwegian.

Clark is quite famous in Europe, form being in command when NATO for the first time in its history conducted military operations in 1999. He is also fairly popular, remembered as much as a diplomat as a military commander. He brought the alliance together and answered critical questions form press from all of Europe every day throughout the crisis in a balanced and reassuring way.

Missed clue from NC townhall VP comment.

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:12:07 AM PDT

I was looking at the whole comment made about his VP choice and while everyone has paid attention to Obama using "he", I think another clue was given as well.
When you look at the comment, I noticed there was no mention of someone outside the beltway. Someone who is going to change the way politics are done. Didn't see the word change mentioned. I think this may be a clue that it's someone from DC.

The big freakout

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:07:40 AM PDT

So over at the post announcing the launch of my book, I saw a couple of people freaking out -- freaking out!!!! -- that McCain has the lead in some national polls.

So I sauntered over to Pollster.com to see what all the hoopla was about, and clicked through to their national polls page.  Then I rolled my eyes when I saw that the poll causing such aneurysms was ....

A Zogby poll.

Some people are frackin' hopeless. Really. At the same time, a new Q-poll has Obama up five, Gallup has him up three (after being tied a couple of days ago), Ras has him up two, as does Bloomberg/Times.

Look, the race is tightening at the national level, but it's much less tight when you look at the state-by-state numbers that, you know, actually decide the presidency. So while it's not exactly a cakewalk, freaking out over single polls from shitty, discredited pollsters like Zogby is pretty pathetic.

We've got the veep announcements and the conventions to get through, and then the race will start in earnest. Be zen. Freaking out over crappy pollsters is just lame. Keep your eye on the composite -- Obama still leads that by 1.4 percent -- and maintain perspective -- McCain has never crossed the 45 percent threshold while Obama bobs between 45 and 50.

I'll be officially worried when McCain shows the ability to break that barrier of support. If he suddenly starts hovering in the upper 40s, then we might have trouble. But ultimately, this is a state-by-state battle. And in the electoral college fight, Obama still has a solid lead -- without even taking into account the ground machine Obama is building (pollsters aren't).

Wimp Obama refuses to physically attack McCain w/pole

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:03:20 AM PDT

Like many others here, I have been loudly "encouraging" Barack Obama to physically attack the geezer, John McCain.

But, no.

Obama is all "pacifist" and shit and he, apparently, doesn't think knocking the snot out of that old goat is "the right thing to do."

Well, I have news for Mr. "I'll-play-nice" Obama:

                                   Nice guys finish last.

(And, yes, Obama camp, feel free to use that quote I just made up.)

When is Obama gonna', literally, punch McCain square in his pre-cancerous-scarred beak?

Grok Barack - Yes We Can -

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:55:53 AM PDT

I am always amazed when in the company of other progressives and liberals how truly regressive and unwilling to change we can be. Diary after diary, comments by the thousands about what? How we can't, how we shouldn't and how Obama is going wrong. Well Obama hasn't gone wrong, we've just stopped listening and started grinding the same old axes. We spend too much time bashing and not enough time listening, fear and ignorance is abundant on BOTH sides of the ideological divide. Follow me below the fold for hopefully some insight into how all the fears of your worst nightmares coming true are in fact the realization of your most heartfelt dreams for this country.

Confound Pat Buchanan making sense again

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:51:47 AM PDT

There are only a few PB afficianados on this site, and by afficianados I mean people who are willing to hold their noses past the neo-con stink to get at the traditional conservative perspective. Certainly Buchanan has crossed the line too many times. But often, and especially with regard to foreign policy, Buchanan makes sense, like yesterday's article "Who Started Cold War II?"

What this country needs is a Populist!

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:46:31 AM PDT

Someone who can call out to the throngs of disaffected and disenfranchised people; Democrat or Republican, black, white, brown, red, yellow, rich or poor, young or old.  Those who are completely and utterly fed up with the current political system.

The revolving door in the White House has ruined politics, ruined countless lives due to the malfeasance of the people in charge, ruined the hopes of lower middle class and lower class peoples who want to better themselves, ruined our national reputation among our allies overseas, ruined our ability to back up our words with actions when need be.

What we are witnessing today isn't the result of George W. Bush's mistakes and utter disregard for the rule of law.  On the contrary, this country has been on a slow downward decline and it began not just 8 years ago, but over 40 years ago when Nixon was running for office in 1968.

Dear Papa

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:44:01 AM PDT

This is the first of two letters in an ongoing correspondence with my beautiful grandfather. He is an Oklahoma man. He is one of those "Salt of the Earth" kind of men. I respect him and love him more than I can say.

He is a life long Democrat. A rare bird in Oklahoma. He is aslo a WWII vet and was active in his community for many years. He served as mayor of his tiny town and was a memeber of various organizations that helped out the less fortunate and he is an amazing father and grandfather.

He has told me he won't vote for Barack Obama. It is because of his race. He is also being shown every viral email out in cyberland, not because he is hooked up. He is not. He hates the idea of learning something so foreign to him at this time in his life. He is 87. He is looking for any reason to not vote for him. He does not like that he has to admit to me that it is his race.

These letters are personal, but I thought I would share them in case any of you might be going through the same thing.

Obama using Too Many Words  w/poll

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:39:30 AM PDT

I don't think its a good idea to freak out about Obama's current dip in the polls. With the exception of the VERY WRONG and INACCURATE Zogby poll, Obama is still tied with McCain nationally.

However, some tactical revision is warranted given the shift in public opinion.

Obama uses too many words as a rule. And on top of that he uses to many fifty cent words.

Simplify, simplify, simplify. I believe Aristotle said that. Obama needs someone new to come into his war room. (Like Schmidt did for McCain)

Daily Kos and the "Jackalope"

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:25:38 AM PDT

In Douglas, Wyoming, there is a museum created to honor the "jackalope", a mythical creature that is a hybrid between the jackrabbit and antelope. While nearly all sane people believe that the jackalope is a fictional creature, there are those who still believe, and some who have actively devoted themselves to hunting these fierce creatures:

jackalope

Here at DKos, I feel like I am on a similar search- the hybrid between the Chicken Little and the Ostrich.

What Does "Change" Really Mean?

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 09:24:42 AM PDT

Barack Obama has built his whole campaign around change. But he has not yet explained why we need that change. You might think that's a strange criticism because he has theoretically been talking about why we need change this whole time. But in fact, he hasn't; not real change. What do I mean by that?
